post "Writing Tips for IELTS".
WRITING TIPS FOR IELTS |
- I will try to mention all the essential things that you have to consider while writing. So you will get a better score in the IELTS writing module.
First, let's talk about the writing test.
- As you know there are two tasks that you have to write in the Writing module of the IELTS exam.
- Task 1 and Task 2
- Task 1 is different for academics and general training candidates. However, Task 2 is the same for both.
- For academic candidates, task 1 is report writing, while for general training candidates it is letter writing.
- Task 2 is essay writing for both candidates.
Many types of questions will be asked in the IELTS Writing
Task 1.
- Such as in academic module bar graphs, line graphs, pie-charts, tables, map writing, process diagrams, etc.
- Formal, semi-formal and Informal letter General training candidate.
We will discuss each question types in detail in the next
post.
Today, I'm just writing some general tips that you should
follow while writing and how to improve your writing skills.
"If you want to improve your writing you should read
more."
As mentioned above,
you should know that writing and reading are interconnected, like listening and
speaking.
To improve your
writing skills, you should read more and more.
To improve band score in IELTS Writing you should follow the tips below.
1. Whatever you write, write clearly:
- Many people have the habit of cursive writing, Sometimes, the examiner doesn't understand some of the letters like "e" and "o". So they count it as spelling mistakes and you lose marks at that time.So try to write as clearly as you can.
2. Read the instructions twice:
- As you know, instruction is very important for the whole IELTS exam. Through the instructions, you will know about the task.
- You should not give any additional information in the report writing, such as you cannot add any suggestions, or you cannot make any assumptions, you only need to write what is given in the task.
3. Minimum word count:
- You should know the minimum word limit for Tasks 1 and 2.
- In task 1 you should write at least 150 minimum and 250 for the task 2.
- You will be penalized if you write less than the word limit. You may lose the score in task achievement.
- I suggest that you write at least 160-170 words in Task 1 and 270-280 in Task 2.
4. Plan before writing
- You should not start writing so you get an answer sheet.
- You need to invest at least 5 minutes for Task 1 planning and 7 to 10 minutes for Task 2 planning.
- If you plan, writing will be easier for you.
- In planning time you need to think about what we should write in the introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion.
5. Write your idea in a logical arrangement
- For that, you should know the structure of the writing tasks.
- In the exam, you have to write your task in a logical arrangement, you should compose the essay with the arrangement of ideas, You have to write in paragraphs, so the examiner can easily understand and give a high band score.
6. Time management
- You know that the weightage of task 2 is twice than task 1. So you should spend more time on task 2.
- I recommend you to spend at least 40 minutes for task 2 and 20 minutes for task 1. And start writing with Task 2. Because if there will be anything left to write in Task 1, you lose less than task 2.
7. Paraphrase the question.
- Many students write the same words of the question in the introduction. So try to avoid it.
- You will have to learn to paraphrase the question.
- Paraphrase means the same meaning sentence with different words.
- If you copy the question then you will lose some marks, so try to write it in your own words.
8. Use a different sentence structure:
- Many students simply write simple sentences in tasks 1 and 2. "Grammar range and accuracy" is one of the criteria for checking the IELTS writing part. So you need to write a mixture of simple, compound and complex sentences.
- We will discuss these sentence types in the grammar section that we will discuss later.
- In order to get a high band score in writing part of the IELTS exam, you should use different grammatical structures such as passive sentences, complex structures, etc.
9. Check your answer after writing
- This is the crucial part.
- You should take some time to proof-read or recheck after completing both tasks.
- At this point, you have to eliminate minor errors like the article, subject-verb agreement, etc.
- If you do this you can easily identify your minor mistakes and become safe not to lose marks.
10. Do not write informal words
- In the writing test, you should not write informal words such as, you cannot use abbreviations, you cannot use pronouns like I, me, mine, your, you, etc. (Except for informal letters and conclusions where you need to give an opinion).
Note: In informal letters, you can use informal
words.
11. Practice makes perfect.
- As you know that with consistent practice you can achieve anything. So practice writing daily so you can analyze and learn from your mistakes.
- Always check and analyze your answer, where you are making mistakes. It will also be helpful in the actual exam.
Okay, that's it for today. I hope you will get a good score
in IELTS EXAM.
A final tip from me:
- Try to relax before the exam, if you are nervous you will not get a good score.
