Hello everyone, Here I am writing my first blog in which you will know about what actually IELTS Exam is?
What is IELTS? WHY IELTS? TEST FORMAT |
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the exam 📝 that you have to take for many reasons.
Why IELTS?
The reason you are going to appear in IELTS is one of the following:
1. For study 📚 purposes.
If you want to continue ⏩ your study in an English speaking country in the renowned Universities and Colleges then you have to take IELTS for evidence of your English proficiency.
2. For immigration purposes
If you are planning to immigrate to developed countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Germany then you have to take IELTS to get permanent residence as per the government regulation.
3. To work in Some Multinational company.
If you are looking for a job, which is in the English speaking country then you have to take IELTS for evidence of English proficiency.
I hope you are clear about why you have to take IELTS.
Option to take IELTS:
- Pen and paper-based
- Computer-delivered
You can choose either as per your convenience.
Exam types:
- Academic IELTS
- General Training IELTS
- You have to choose carefully.

- If you are a student and planning for higher study then you have a select academic module of IELTS.
- If you are planning to take an exam for immigration purposes or work then you have to choose the General training module of IELTS.
IELTS test format
As you all know that IELTS is a language test, so in this exam, your ability to listen, read, write and speak is checked by the examiners.
Four-part of exam
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
- Listening, reading and writing part is organized on the same day without any break in between them.
- Time and slot for the Speaking part of the exam are allocated to everyone.
- The total test time is around 3 hours.
IELTS LISTENING TEST

Let's talk about each module in detail.
1. Listening(30 minutes)
- In this part, the candidate has to listen to 4 recorded audio, which is spoken by native speakers and audios are in the different accents such as British, American, Canadian Australian.
- The listening test includes 40 questions, question type might be different.
- You will hear the audio-only once. you can not repeat or rewind the audio.
- You can only increase and decrease the volume of the audio as per your desire.
The listening test is divided into 4 parts.
Part 1: in this part, you will hear the conversation between two people in an everyday situation like complaining to a police officer, hotel booking conversation, etc.
Part 2: you will hear a monologue set in an everyday situation, for example, speech about general facilities provided in an organization.
Part 3: in this section, you will hear a conversation between 3 to 4 people, for instance, students discuss with their professor about project topics.
Part 4: you will hear a monologue or lecture on an academic topic, such as a Science lecture.
- In the Listening part after the completion of the audio extra 10 minutes, time will be given to transfer the answer to the answer sheet.

2. Reading (60 minutes)
Note: The reading part of the test is different in the Academic and General training modules.
- In this module, a total of 40 questions will be asked.
- Different types of question types will be used in the test. Many reading skills such as skimming, scanning and intensive Reading are used to solve the questions.
Now you are thinking about what is skimming, scanning and intensive reading?
We will discuss it later in a detailed reading part.
Academic reading:
- 3 long descriptive passages are included in the academic reading module.
- Mostly these passages are from books, novels, newspapers, journals, and magazines.
- These passages are more science-based.
General training reading:
- this module divided into 3 passages. Sometimes, sections 1 and 2 contain more than one text.
- Basically, these passages are from books, magazines, newspapers.
- This is about general topics that we are using in the daily environment.
- The difficulty level increases passage by passage in both modules, In general, 1st passage is easier than 2nd and 3rd, the same as the 3rd one is a little difficult than 1st and 2nd passage.
- We will see many different tips and tricks to solve the various question type.

IELTS READING: QUESTION TYPES
3.Writing (60 minutes)
- In the writing module, you have to attempt 2 tasks.
- Task 1 and Task 2.
- Task 1 is different in academic and general candidate students.
- Task 2 is the same for both.
Task 1. (For academic) Report writing: candidates have to write a report of the given chart, graph, picture or map in their own words.
Task 1 (for general training) Letter writing: Candidates have to write a letter as per the situation, the letter is maybe formal, informal or semiformal depends upon the topic.
- Minimum 150 words required in Task 1.
- There are many criteria for checking, but we will discuss later in the next article.
Task 2. Essay writing.
- Candidates have to write an essay as per the question and topic.
- There are many different types of essays that will be asked, for instance, problem solutions, agree to disagree, etc.
- Both the tasks should be formal language.

WRITING TIPS FOR IELTS
4.Speaking(11 to 14 minutes)
The speaking module contains 3 parts.
- Introduction
- Cue card
- discussion part
- introduction (3-4 minutes)
- In this part examine will ask about yourself and some general topics like hobbies, home interests, etc.
- In this part, you have to answer in one to two sentences.
2. cue card(3-4 minutes)
- In this part, the examiner will give a topic and a minute to prepare about that topic. after that, you have to speak for 1 to 2 minutes until the examiner will stop you.
- Examiners can ask some follow-up questions also.
3. Discussion part(4 to 5 minutes)
- Examiners will ask questions about some topics that are related to the cue card and you have to give a detailed answer in 5 to 6 sentences.
- The question may be about opinion, advantages disadvantages, etc.
- The speaking part will be recorded for further assessment.
