IELTS READING QUESTION TYPES 2021

Are you having trouble finding the answers in the IELTS Reading Exam?

  • Here, I am sharing my experience with you, so you will get a good score in the IELTS Reading Exam.
  • In this article, I will share the types of questions that are asked in the actual IELTS Reading Exam.

Is there an easy way to get a better score?

  • Most people are looking for this answer.  But my simple suggestion is that you can not answer all the questions without understanding the types of questions.
  • Therefore, you should study all types of questions and understand how to solve them.

How many types of questions will be asked in the IELTS Reading exam?

  • As you know, 3 passages in total and 2 to 3 different types of questions will be asked in each passage.

What types of questions are most frequent?

  • Well, that's not certain.  But we can say according to the analysis of the earlier test papers.  Some question types are very common in exams, while some types of questions are very rare.
  • For example, True / False / Not Given, match the headings, Blanks are very common in exams.
  • So if you study these types of questions more, it is easy to get a good score in the reading section.

 Reading Question types:

1. True/False/Not given:

  • In this type of question, you have to answer True/ False/ Not Given.
  • True: if the same meaning information is available in the passage.
  • False: if opposite meaning information is available in the passage.
  • Not given: the information is not available in the passage.
"Answers are always in order''
  • Don’t just focus on the word, you have to focus on the meaning of the sentence.
  • Try to practice more in this question type, you will easily understand.

2. Yes/No/Not Given:

  • The same tips apply, but read the instructions that will be given.
  • Because if you write True instead of Yes, you will lose the score, So be careful.
  • In True/False/Not given: it is based on facts. while Yes/No/Not give is based on the writer's opinion.
"Answers are always in order''
  • You can not write T/F/NG or Y/N/NG, you must write the whole word.

3. Match the headings:

  • You have to choose appropriate heading for each paragraph from the list that will be given to you.
" Answers are in random order"
  • Most people suggest that you should read the first and the last line of the paragraph in this type of question, but I completely disagree.
  • You should read the entire paragraph to understand what the paragraph is about if you understand the entire paragraph you can easily select a title for it.
  • You should choose a title that is not just a little information in 1st or last line but for a whole paragraph.
  • For example, the whole paragraph is about the benefits and the last line is about the problem of something, at which point if you just read the first and last sentence of paragraph you may write the wrong heading because of that last line.
  • So, if you understand the whole paragraph, it will make it easier to get the correct heading.

4. Match the information:

"Answers are in random order"
  • You will have to search for specific information, such as a year, the name of the scientist, etc.
  • You have to scan the information and then select from the information in question.

5. Multiple choice questions:

"Answers are usually in random order"
  • In this type of question, you have to choose the correct option from the given choice.
  • Maybe 4 choices are given to you.
  • Look for the keywords first, understand the meaning of the question, and then search for the answer in the passage.
  • Here you can use the elimination method.
  • In this method, you have to find out which options are not possible, then it will be easier to identify the correct answer.
  • In this type of question, do not find exactly the same words, they can use the synonym of that word.

6. Summary completion:

"Answers are always in order"
  • You will need to complete a summary of the passage or paragraphs by filling in the blanks you are given.
  • Sometimes you have to select the words from the paragraphs, sometimes from the box of synonyms.
  • You have to select the grammatically correct option in the Blanks.

7. Sentence completion:

"Answers are usually in the order"
  • You have to complete the sentence using the words from the passage.
  • Instructions are given for how many words you can type. For example, NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS, WRITE UPTO TWO WORDS, etc.
  • Look for the keywords first, understand the meaning of the question, and then search for the answer in the passage.
  • The grammar of the sentence must be correct otherwise you will lose the score.

8.Global Multiple choice questions:

  • This type of question is the appropriate heading for the whole passage.
  • Tip: After completing all the other questions in the passage, try to find the answer to this question, at last, it will be beneficial to get the correct heading.
  • Try the elimination method here, it will help too.

9. Table completion:

"Answers are always in order"
  • Some information is given in the table Some are missing, you have to fill in the blanks in the table in this type of question type.
  • You have to use the information provided as keywords, try to find it and then look closer, you will find the answers.
  • Identify the type of word you need in the blanks, try to find it in the passage.

10. Flow-chart completion:

"Answer may not come in order"
  • You have to complete the flow-chart using words from the passage.
  • You need to understand the direction and meaning of the flowchart.
  • Instructions are very important, you can check how many words you have to write.

11. Short answer questions:

"Answers are always in order"
  • You have to write a short answer from the passage.  The word limit is given in the instructions.  Another tip is just like 'sentence completion'.

  • So, I hope you understood all the question types that will be asked in IELTS reading.
  • I will share other tips for reading in the next article.

A final tip from me:

  • Try to relax before the exam, if you are nervous you will not get a good score.
