SPEAKING TIPS FOR IELTS

Today, I'm going to share tips that will help you improve your speaking.

First, we will look at information about the speaking test.

  • As you know, the speaking test is like one-on-one interviews.
  • The speaking test is the same for both academics and general training candidates.

The test lasts about 11 to 14 minutes.  And is divided into 3 parts.
  • Introduction ( 4to5 minutes)
  • Cue card( 1 minute for the preparation and 2 minutes for speaking)
  • Discussion round( 4 to 5 minutes)

There are 4 marking criteria for the speaking test.
  • Fluency and cohesion
  • Lexical resources
  • Grammatical range and accuracy
  • Pronunciation

We will discuss all the marking criteria for all modules later. The above information is general information about the test.

If you follow these tips below, you will get high scores in the IELTS speaking module.

1. Speak without hesitation:

  • If you hesitate to speak up, you will lose the score. Try to avoid hesitation by practicing daily.
  • "Read aloud" is the best way to improve your speaking skills. Whatever you read, read aloud which will make your tongue easier to speak.  Through this method, many people have improved their speaking level.

2. Understand the questions correctly:;

  • Most people make mistakes here.  They do not focus on listening to questions.  If you understand the question you will answer better, otherwise, you are going off-topic.  So it is also important to listen carefully to all the questions.

3. Practice sample answers:

  • You should prepare as many sample answers as possible.  If you are prepared for the answers before the exam, it helps you a lot, it will be easier for you to answer the actual exam.
  • For sample answers, you can refer to the Cambridge Books, you can also use a makkar speaking book, and many more books are available in the market.
  • I will mention the links to the book in this blog later.

4. If you don't understand the question, ask again:

  • Many students have problems understanding the question clearly.  So they give the wrong answer, which is not asked.
  • So if you do not understand the question correctly, then you can ask the examiner without hesitation.
  • Asking the question again has no negative effect on the band's score.  So don't worry about that.

5. Maintaining the length of the answers:

  • Students have no idea what they are saying while speaking tests.
  • You should know how long your answer is.
  • For example, in an introduction, some students answer in only one word or sentence.  You should extend your idea, so the examiner has not a chance to ask "why?".
  • In Part II, try to speak until the examiner stops you.
  • And in Part-3, you should give long answers.  So you can use examples and detailed explanations.

6. Arrange your ideas logically:

  • Try to use linking words when necessary.  It will organize your speech logically.
  • For example, in addition, for instance, furthermore, moreover, however, etc.
  • This will boost your score in cohesion(one of the checking criteria).

7. Think before you speak:

  • Many students begin their answers without even thinking and run into problems, and they complain about the examiner asking many "Why?"  Questions.
  • If you are unclear about the answer, try to think about it, and use fillers like, that is a difficult question, I have never thought about this question, let me think about this topic, these natural fillers give you time to think about the topic and  You can give an excellent answer after thinking.

8. If you have made any mistake, correct yourself:

  •  While Speaking, sometimes you know you are making mistakes, do not panic and then correct yourself.
  • And if you can't do that, don't worry but you won't stop speaking.
  • Some minor errors are ignored if they do not affect communication.

9. Do not rote-learn the answer:

  • Many students rote-learn the answer.
  • They do not know that the examiner will easily recognize it.
  • If you do the same you can lose the score.
  • You can read other people's ideas but you can't copy them.  It will make a bad impression in front of the examiner.

These are the tips you should follow to get a good score in the IELTS Speaking Exam.

Some additional tips to consider:

  • Speaking is not just for IELTS.  It also helps a lot in life.  So don't just prepare for the IELTS.  So practice more and more to improve your speaking.
  • Try talking to your friends in English, discuss any topics you like in English.

Speak, record and analyze:

  • This tip is the best way to improve your speaking in a short time.
  • You have to record yourself while speaking.
  • After that, you have to listen to it and analyze it, where you are making mistakes.
  • Learn from your mistakes

Listen to speakers:

  • As you know that listening is directly connected to speaking, so more you hear more you can speak.

A final tip from me:

  • Try to relax before the exam, if you are nervous you will not get a good score.
